Social Responsibility

I realize no one reads the serious blog posts... it's okay... it makes me feel better about myself.  I really want a dog right now.  But I'm trying to be responsible about it- which is difficult because I always want instant gratification and usually get it. I'm waiting to find the perfect one (which means I can't have my Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Mastiff, Rott... YET).  This has brought me into contact with lots of dogs.
Please get your pet spayed- please don't breed your pet or buy from a breeder- please dont get one unless you are prepared for it-PLEASE!  It's so sad that so many millions of animals are killed every year because people are so irresponsible.  If you don't plan on having your pet forever- don't get one!  If you'll have to give it up (and don't have someone to give it to) because you move- you aren't ready for a pet.  If you'll have to give it up because you can't afford it- don't get it (I don't care if you don't get rabies shots or can't afford training or ridiculous medical expenses- basically, don't just cop out and say you can't afford it).  If you give it up because it got too big, or it pees everywhere, or it chews everything or anything like that (these are animals and they do things like that) don't get one if you aren't prepared to deal with these issues.
I don't know how many are euthanized each year but I found anywhere from 5-12 million in the US.  Most of this is because owners don't neuter/spay their pet then the animal becomes a hassle and they abandon him.
Now, abortions...
I found it interesting the reasons people get abortions:
25.5% Want to postpone childbearing

21.3% Cannot afford a baby

14.1% Has relationship problem or partner does not want pregnancy

12.2% Too young; parent(s) or other(s) object to pregnancy

10.8% Having a child will disrupt education or job

7.9% Want no (more) children

3.3% Risk to fetal health

2.8% Risk to maternal health

1.1% Other

1% Rape

I'm going to go out on a limb and point out the selfishness that this proves... 3% of abortions are to save the mother's life... 92% of abortions are basically because a baby would disrupt their lives...  I don't understand the 3.3% of abortions for 'risk to fetal health'... aside from the people who wouldn't dare have children with any sort of disability- fetal health vs abortions... hmm...that leaves 2% of abortions that might possibly not be for selfish reasons.  There are close to 2 million abortions in the US every year- who knows how many are in China and other countries.  Approx 1 million people want to adopt babies, but can't.  That solves half of them.  I think I'm going to make it my new "thing" to stop abortions.  Maybe force people to be parents for the other 1 million.
Again, I don't guarantee the accuracy of any of my numbers...
